Should Be Reading.
Well, for this Musing Monday I decided to choose #4 – “Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it."
I’m currently reading Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. I’ve wanted to read this book for a long while, since some of my friends have already read it and said the book was very good. Finally I decided to borrow the book from the library and read it.
"In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift-an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brillance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity."
What I think of it so far? Well, I’m really enjoying it. The author’s writing is very good, full of historical and literary references, but still very easy to read. I’m now getting to the part where the main character, Jean-Baptiste, finally transforms himself into a serial killer. So, I guess the story is going to get even more interesting. And I’m really curious about the ending.
What about you, have you read or heard about this book?
